Avaya embraces BYOD trend with iPad app

Avaya has launched its next-generation mobile collaboration for consumer devices with an Apple iPad application. The Avaya Flare Communicator is designed to provide enterprise-class voice, instant messaging and presence with email integration over both Wi-Fi and 3G networks -- embracing the BYOD (bring your own device) trend that is increasingly popular among enterprise users. Avaya plans to offer the app for additional consumer devices and operating systems later this year.

Among the features, the Avaya Flare Communicator provides:

• a view of enterprise associates' availability from the contacts card,

• the capability for two simultaneous voice calls using the iPad, and

• multi-tasking on the iPad tablet so users can, for example, simultaneously read email, attend a Web conference or a voice conference call and still use IM use other productivity applications.

Since the application uses Wi-Fi hotspots or 3G connectivity, enterprise can (where cost effective) reduce mobile expenses by using the data channel and avoiding roaming charges while traveling across different cellular networks.

The app is available as a free download for users from the Apple App Store, and Avaya customers with Aura 6.1 or later can obtain up to 50 Avaya Aura client access licenses to connect users during an introductory offer from Jan. 24 through April 30.

Avaya's Flare Communicator release follows in the heels of an announcement earlier this year when the company unveiled the latest version its unified communications (UC) solution for small and midsize enterprises that included enhancements designed to improve collaboration with mobile capabilities, an also building on the previously available Essential Mobility solution for IP Office.
